Fun Facts About Goats

Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans around 11,000 years ago.  Since goats are herd animals they will become depressed if they don’t have any goat companions.  It isn’t healthy for the goat if it is by itself as a pet.   Goats actually will not eat everything – they are picky eaters.  They like to pick out the choice bits of forage.  They are foragers not grazers.  What that means is that as foragers goats search and gather their own food.  Whereas cattle and sheep are grazers that have pasture or food supplied for them.

Other fun facts about goats:

  • They love to climb and will climb to the top of trees.
  • They can be taught their name and come when called.
  • Their lifespan is about the same as a dog.
  • They have excellent vision – they can see 320 to 340 degrees (compared to humans with 160-210).
  • They were some of the first animals brought to America.
