Giraffe Fun Facts

Our pattern of the month is the giraffe!  To celebrate we are offering a free coloring page that could also be turned into a stick puppet.   And in later blogs we will have free downloads of a giraffe paper bag puppet and a pattern to make a simple felt hand puppet which requires no sewing!

Fun Facts About Giraffes

Giraffes are among the most peaceful mammals on the planet.  They are found on the dry savannas of Africa.  Even though they can be as tall as 18 feet (about as tall as three humans stacked on top of each other) they are truly gentle giants.  With such long legs they can run up to 35 miles per hour for a short distance.  Or they can cruise for longer distances at 10 miles per hour.

Other fun facts about giraffes are:

  • No two giraffes have the same pattern
  • Their hooves are the size of dinner plates
  • Their tongues are a dark blue to prevent getting sunburn
  • Their tongues can twist and grip leaves from between thorns on trees
  • Their mouths have tough skin to protect it from thorns
  • They usually sleep standing up and only between 5 to 30 minutes a day
