Hippo Craft Activities

February 15 is National Hippo Day! And even if you missed National Hippo Day, every day is a fun day to create a hippo craft. In this blog we want to share our favorite craft activities that we found on the web. We had so much fun looking for hippo craft activities! In the last blog article we listed some Fun Facts about hippopotamuses.  We also had a free download of a hippo coloring page for the kids (or you) to color.

I Heart Crafty Things has this fun and simple paper plate craft.   I love paper plate crafts since paper plates are so inexpensive.

Something even cheaper than paper plates is newspaper!  This clever newspaper hippo craft is also from I Heart Crafty Things.  Adding google eyes and miniature marshmallows adds another dimension.  As long as the marshmallows make it to the craft and not in everyone’s mouths.

What a clever idea on how to recycle all of those old CD’s!  Turn them into hippos!  Get the free printable from Artsy Craftsy Mom.

These adorable hippos are a fun way to recycle cardboard tubes.  Idea from Creative Family Fun.  With some craft paint and googly eyes you now have a herd of hippos!

Have some spare paper lunch bags laying around? Then get ready to turn them into some hippo puppets. Use our free hippo paper bag puppet pattern designed by The Tucson Puppet Lady herself!  It’s a great activity for the kids to color, cut out, glue and then play with.

And if you are really bitten by the craft bug, you can use our Hippopotamus Puppet Sewing Pattern to make your own puppet. It is available as a digital download so you can start sewing immediately. We recommend using fleece and felt fabrics because they are inexpensive and readily available from craft stores. Customers tell us how easy our step by step patterns (with lots of pictures) are to follow especially after watching the video tutorials.  In fact you can watch our free video tutorial on how to sew the hippopotamus puppet right now!

NEXT BLOG FEATURES BOOKS AND FREE PUPPET PATTERN

In our next blog, we’ll be sharing a few books which feature the hippo that preschoolers (and older kids) enjoy. The books range from fact to fiction. We’ll also have a free pattern download for a felt hippo hand puppet. You don’t even have to know how to sew, the whole puppet can be made using a hot glue gun. Stay tuned to our blog to get your free download.
