Fun Facts About Parrots

Parrots can mimic human speech.  They are very social, so they communicate by mimic the sounds around them.  They don’t have vocal cords like humans do.  Instead they use muscles in their throats to direct the air differently.  This allows them to imitate sounds like a phone ringing, barking dog or a toilet flushing.  They are smart.   Scientists believe that parrots have the same logic as a 4 year old child.  That’s because they have a brain neural circuit similar to humans.  They can even add, subtract and understand the meaning of zero.

Other fun facts about parrots are:

  • They love to swing!  Even in the wild they will swing because they enjoy the movement
  • They eat with their feet
  • They can live over 60 years
  • They mate for life
  • A group of parrots is called a pandemonium
  • The death metal band called Hatebeak has a gray parrot as its lead vocalist
