Frogs in Books

In our previous blog article we listed a few links to craft projects featuring frogs that we found around the web. We also had a free download of frog paper bag puppet pattern.

We are continuing the frog theme with a list of books that we thought would be interesting and fun to pair with a frog puppet.  We’ve noticed that kids become more engaged during reading when a puppet is used to help bring a book alive.

WHY USE A PUPPET WHILE READING?
    • Kids love puppets.
    • Puppets boost creativity and stimulate kids’ imaginations
    • Sometimes kids feel more comfortable reading to a puppet rather than to an adult
    • A puppet can be used as an impartial character allowing kids to express their true emotions.
    • A puppet made from our patterns is perfect for story time because it is soft and pliable.  It can be stuffed into a small place ready to pop out to engage the kids.  And it is easy to wash!
Books Featuring Frogs

I’m a Frog by Mo Willems is for kids 6-8 grades 1-3 though I’ve read it successfully to preschoolers.  They especially enjoy having the story extended with puppets retelling the story.  Gerald is surprised when Piggie announces she is a frog.  This is a good story about pretending.

Another Mo Willems book, but this one has poignant text and is beautifully illustrated by John J Muth.  City Dog Country Frog is a story about a friendship through the seasons. Whenever City Dog visits the country he runs straight for Country Frog’s rock. In winter, things change for City Dog and Country Frog. Come spring, friendship blooms again, a little different this time. For kids Preschool to Kindergarten, ages 3-6.

Even though I’ve already listed the pop up book The Wide Mouthed Frog written by Keith Faulkner and illustrated by Jonathon Lambert in alligator books because it has the coolest pop up picture of an alligator, I definitely want to include it in the frog list because…it stars a frog.  It is for ages 2-5 years.  The preschool set really enjoys this book, especially when it is acted out by puppets.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs by Priscilla Burris is a count and sing book  perfect for all ages of preschoolers.  It has a fun and repetitious rhyme with adorable frog characters.  Plus the glittery foil on each page is fun!

National Geographic Readers: Frogs! by Elizabeth Carney is loaded with great photos and cool facts about frogs.  For ages 4-6, preschool to grade 1.  Even the little ones will enjoy looking at the pictures as someone older reads.
