In our previous blog article we listed a few links to craft projects featuring the platypus that we found around the web. We also had a free download of platypus paper bag puppet pattern.

We are continuing the platypus theme with a list of books that we thought would be interesting and fun to pair with a platypus puppet.

Why Use a Puppet While Reading?

• Kids love puppets.
• Puppets help to bring books alive.
• Sometimes kids feel more comfortable reading to a puppet rather than to an adult.
• A puppet made from our patterns is perfect for story time because it is soft and pliable.  It can be stuffed into a small place ready to pop out to engage the kids.

 

Platypus by Chris Riddell is for the 2-5 year old crowd.  Simple text and cute illustrations.

Pete the Cat and the New Guy by Kimberly and James Dean.   In this book featuring the ever popular Pete the Cat the new guy in the neighborhood is a platypus. The message is acceptance – even if someone is very different.

A Platypus, Probably by Sneed B. Collard III, Illustrated by Andrew Plant.  Appropriate for all ages because there are both a story and facts about the platypus in addition to engaging illustrations.   Depending on the attention span of preschoolers you may have to do some editing as you read.

Platypus by Sue Whiting and Illustrated by Mark Jackson also is appropriate for all ages because it too has both a story and facts about the platypus along with beautiful artwork.  Even though the text is geared more for older kids, preschoolers would enjoy this book.  Again, depending on the attention span of little ones you may have to do some editing as you read.

The Amazing Adventure of Paddy Platypus Vol 1 by Tom de Paola is grade level 2-3 with paragraphs and sprinkled with illustrations.

Free Download of platypus Hand Puppet pattern

Can’t sew?  We have a free download for a platypus hand puppet pattern using felt squares available from craft stores.  The puppet can be made without sewing – all you need is a hot glue gun.
