Our pattern of the month is the Cat! Did you know that international Cat Day is always August 8? it is a day to honor our cat friends and to advocate for cats. Scientists believe that cats and humans have been associated for over 10,000 years. Scientists also don’t know why cats purr, but they do know that the purring can improve bone density and help healing.
In our previous blog article we listed a few links to craft projects featuring bears that we found around the web. We also had a free download of a bear paper bag puppet pattern.
We are continuing the bear theme with a list of books that we thought would be interesting and fun to pair with a bear puppet. We’ve noticed that kids become more engaged during reading when a puppet is used to help bring a book alive.

Our pattern of the month is the Bear! There is something about bears that just make them so adorable even though they are among the most massive and powerful animals on earth. Polar bears are the largest and the sun bear is the smallest. Bears were honored in early civilizations. They were a symbol of power, strength and love. They care deeply about others – they will risk their lives to save a cub or a sibling.

Create your own vulture or buzzard felt hand puppet. The puppet is very simple to make – just cut felt and glue together. You could hand sew it too, if you wanted.

Our pattern of the month is the Vulture! Even though vultures are not cute nor cuddly looking, they are very important to our ecosystem since they are nature’s “clean up crew.” Since they are scavengers they help to curb dangerous diseases and bacteria. There is a difference between vultures and buzzards. They are not the same bird, but in the United States when someone refers to a buzzard, they are actually referring to a turkey vulture.
